SSAB’s ASTM A656 Grade 80 steel plate is a high-strength, low-alloy material known for its excellent formability. Designed for applications demanding enhanced strength-to-weight ratios, this steel plate is available in two forms: temper-leveled and cut-to-length, or as discrete, as-rolled plate.

A656 Grade 80 plates are intended for use in a variety of applications, including transport trailers, construction machinery, crane booms, mobile manlifts, agricultural equipment, rail cars, and the frames and chassis of heavy vehicles.

Mill Plate: For plate thicknesses below 0.437 inches and above 1.0 inch, widths under 84 inches and over 120 inches, and lengths shorter than 120 inches and longer than 1020 inches, please contact us for further information.
Temper Leveled Plate: SSAB produces temper leveled plate products using the temper leveled coil (TLC) process at our Cut-To-Length facilities. For more details about our temper leveling process, please refer to the SSAB Americas: North American Cut-to-Length Operations brochure available in the Downloads section of our Commercial Steels Overview page. For thicknesses exceeding 0.500 inches up to 0.625 inches, please reach out to us.
Coil for Conversion To: Coils must be processed into finished plate products with all required processing, inspections, and testing completed to meet the specification. Additional processing, such as temper leveling, may be necessary to achieve the ASTM-specified minimum yield strength. Coils for Conversion To products will be certified for chemistry only. Please inform SSAB whether the coils will undergo temper mill processing. Coil availability varies, so please inquire. For coil thicknesses over 0.500 inches, widths below 60 inches, and widths over 96 inches, please contact us. Slitting capabilities depend on strength levels and thicknesses, so please inquire about all slit coil opportunities.

Mill Plate Tolerances: The thickness, width, and length tolerances for A656 Grade 80 plates comply with ASTM A6 standards. All plate thicknesses adhere to ASTM A6 Standard Flatness tolerances.

Temper Leveled Plate Tolerances: For A656 Grade 80 plates, the thickness, width, and length tolerances also follow ASTM A6 guidelines. Temper leveled plates can achieve ASTM A6 Half-Standard Flatness tolerances or better, depending on the processing line and the material's minimum yield strength.

Coil Conversion Tolerances: For minimum gauge orders, the thickness and width tolerances conform to ASTM specifications A568 for thicknesses under 0.230 inches, and A635 for thicknesses from 0.230 inches to 1.00 inch. Thickness tolerances align with Table S1.1 of ASTM specifications A635 and A568. Width tolerances comply with Table 6 of ASTM A568 and Table 3 of ASTM A635. For nominal gauge orders, thickness tolerances require specific inquiries.
