ASTM A299 is a set of specifications that define the properties of manganese-silicon carbon steel plates designed for use in welded boilers and other pressure vessels. These plates come in two grades, A and B, with Grade B exhibiting higher yield and tensile strength compared to Grade A. The increased strength is attributed to the higher concentrations of carbon (C), manganese (Mn), and silicon (Si) in the composition.

This standard, ASTM A299, finds widespread use in the manufacturing of pressure and boiler equipment. Plates meeting these specifications and having a thickness of up to 50 mm are typically provided in their as-rolled condition. Beyond this thickness, plates may be ordered in a normalized or stress-relieved state, or a combination of both. For plates exceeding 50 mm in thickness, normalization is a mandatory requirement.
