The ASTM A285 standard pertains to carbon steel plates with low and intermediate tensile strength, specifically designed for fusion-welded pressure vessels.
This standard includes three grades of steel plates: A, B, and C, with the most commonly used being ASTM A285 Grade C plates. These plates are manufactured using killed, semi-killed, capped, or rimmed steel practices at the manufacturer's discretion.
For killed carbon steels, reference should be made to the following ASTM specifications:
- A299/A299M: Carbon steel manganese silicon pressure vessel plates.
- A515/A515M: Carbon steel for intermediate and higher temperature services of pressure vessel plates.
- A516/A516M: Carbon steel for moderate and lower temperature pressure vessel plates.
The maximum thickness of plates is restricted to 50 mm [2 inches] for all grades.

Coils are not considered under A285 until they have been cut into plates.
