ASTM A516 is the standardized specification used for manufacturing pressure vessels, including applications like oil tanks. It pertains to carbon steel material intended for services at moderate and lower temperatures, enhancing the steel's notch toughness during welding processes.
ASTM A516 Grade 70 - Widely Utilized Grade Classified into four grades based on varying strength levels (55/60/65/70), Grade 70 stands out as the most commonly employed material.
Grade | Tensile Strength Ksi [MPa] |
---|---|
55 [380] | 55-75 |
60 [415] | 60-80 |
65 [450] | 65-85 |
70 [485] | 70-90 |
Maximum Thickness Restriction The plates' maximum thickness is solely constrained by the composition's capability to meet the specified mechanical property criteria. Plates manufactured from coils and provided without heat treatment or only subjected to stress relieving must meet the requirements and test results outlined in A20/A20M. Coils are not qualified under this specification until they are cut into plates.
Grade | Maximum Thickness in. [mm] |
---|---|
55 [380] | 12 [305] |
60 [415] | 8 [205] |
65 [450] | 8 [205] |
70 [485] | 8 [205] |

Material and Manufacturing Specifications for A516 Plates
Material Composition and Grain Size: The steel must be killed and meet the fine austenitic grain size requirement specified in SPEC A20/A20M.
Heat Treatment: Plates with a thickness of 40 mm [1.5 in] or less are typically supplied in an as-rolled condition. If normalization or stress relief is required, it should be specified before placing the order. Plates exceeding 40 mm [1.5 in] in thickness shall undergo normalization.
For plates with a thickness of 1.5 in [40 mm] and under, notch-toughness tests require normalization unless otherwise specified by the purchaser.
Upon agreement with the purchaser, faster cooling rates than air cooling may be used to enhance toughness, provided the plates are subsequently tempered at 1100 to 1300°F [595 to 705 ℃].
